Our Story

We Started Taproot Because We Believe in You.

Taproot was born from a simple but powerful realization: recovery doesn't just need a place to stay; it needs a place to belong. Brenda Cross founded Taproot after three decades of walking alongside individuals and families in the Sacramento area, witnessing firsthand the gap between clinical treatment and real-world stability. Her journey in recovery started over 30 years ago, and throughout her career as a Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor, she saw that lasting change happens in the quiet moments of a shared meal, the accountability of a morning check-in, and the safety of a home that actually feels like home. Taproot Recovery Residences was established to provide exactly that—a sanctuary where the roots of recovery can grow deep and strong.

Today, Taproot stands as a testament to the belief that everyone is capable of transformation when they are grounded in care, dignity, and a community that refuses to give up on them.

Our Promise to Every Resident

Dear Future Resident,I want you to know that your decision to seek a safe place to recover is the most courageous step you will ever take. When we founded Taproot, we didn't want to just create another 'facility.' We wanted to build a home — a place where the air feels lighter and the weight of the past doesn't have to define your morning. My promise to you is simple: We will see you as a whole person, not a diagnosis. We will provide the safety you need to be vulnerable, the structure you need to grow, and the community you need to thrive. You don't have to walk this path alone anymore. Welcome home.

This is what it's really like

Sober Living at Taproot Is Not What You Think.

It's not a halfway house. It's not a facility. It's a real home with real people who are done surviving and ready to start living. Here's what that actually looks like.

Let's be real

What Sober Living Actually is

Sober living is the bridge between treatment and the rest of your life. It's not clinical. Nobody is monitoring your vitals or handing you a pill cup. There's no white coat. No fluorescent lights.

It's a house. A real one. With a kitchen you cook in, a bed that's yours, and housemates who know exactly what 3 AM cravings feel like — because they've fought them too.

At Taproot, you'll follow a daily structure. You'll go to work or school. You'll attend meetings. You'll sit in a circle with people who scare you a little with how honest they are. You'll learn to cook, to budget, to show up on time, to ask for help, and to forgive yourself.

Our certified counselor with 30+ years of experience doesn't sit in an office waiting for you to book an appointment. She's in the house. She knows your name, your story, and whether you had a bad day before you even say it. That's the Taproot difference.

Your day, your pace

A Day in Your New Life

Structure without rigidity. Here's what a typical day looks like at Taproot — flexible enough to fit your life, consistent enough to keep you grounded.

Rise at Your Own Pace

No alarm clocks, no rush. Your morning is yours — make your bed, grab breakfast, take a moment to breathe. Recovery doesn't start with pressure. It starts with showing up for yourself, one morning at a time.

Chores & Home Care

No alarm clocks, no rush. Your morning is yours — make your bed, grab breakfast, take a moment to breathe. Recovery doesn't start with pressure. It starts with showing up for yourself, one morning at a time.

Purpose & Personal Time

Go to work, attend your program, hit a meeting, look for a job, or take care of personal business. This is your time to build something. Work schedules are always respected — we structure around your life, not the other way around.

Wind Down

The day slows down. Cook dinner, hang out in the common areas, call someone you love, or just sit outside. This is the part of the day that used to be the hardest — and slowly becomes the most peaceful.

Breathalyzer Check-In

Every resident breathalyzes each night. It's not about distrust — it's about building a culture of honesty and accountability. When everyone is committed to the same standard, it makes the house safer for all of us.

Curfew & Rest

Doors lock at 10 PM. Your body heals when you sleep. Your mind processes the work you did today. Tomorrow you get to do it all again — and it gets a little easier every time.

No sugarcoating

What We Expect From You

We love you unconditionally. But love without structure is just a nice feeling. Here's what living at Taproot actually requires.

Complete Sobriety

Zero tolerance. Zero exceptions.

This isn't negotiable. No drugs, no alcohol, no exceptions. We conduct regular, random drug and alcohol testing — not to catch you, but to protect the entire house. Every person here is trusting that the people around them are sober. That trust is sacred.

Show Up

Be present in your own recovery.

Attend every house meeting. Participate in community life. Don't just live here — be here. Recovery happens in the moments you'd rather skip. The meeting you don't want to go to is usually the one you need most.

Stay Engaged

Work. Learn. Grow. Every day.

Whether it's a job, school, outpatient treatment, or volunteering — you need to be building something during the day. Idle time is relapse time. We'll help you find employment, connect with programs, and create a routine that gives your days meaning.

Respect the Home

This is your home. Treat it that way.

Clean up after yourself. Respect quiet hours. Take care of shared spaces like they belong to you — because they do. When everyone takes ownership, the house becomes a place you're proud to come home to.

Honor the Schedule

Curfew is 10 PM — and it's there for you.

Curfew is 10 PM every night because a good night's rest is part of the healing. We respect work schedules — if your job runs late, we understand. Curfew extensions are available with an approved request. The goal isn't to control your time. It's to give you the kind of steady, predictable routine that makes recovery feel possible.

Support Each Other

Your housemates are not strangers.

Check in on the quiet guy. Celebrate someone's 30 days. Drive a housemate to a meeting. The bonds you build here will outlast your time at Taproot — and some of them will save your life.

The questions you're really asking

The Honest Answers

No. It will be one of the hardest things you've ever done. But it will also be one of the most worthwhile.

Probably, at least once. Growth is uncomfortable. The version of you that wants to run is the same version that got you here. Stay anyway.

You'll make something deeper than friends. You'll find people who understand the version of you that nobody else has seen — and they'll love you anyway.

If you're doing it right, you won't have time to be bored. Between work, meetings, house meetings, and building a life — your days will be full.

Sober living works for people who work it. We can give you the structure, the support, and the love. You have to bring the willingness.

When to Consider Sober Living

Signs Your Loved One May Need Sober Living

Have you noticed any of the following?

  • They've completed treatment but don't have a safe, sober place to live.
  • They keep returning to the same environment — and the same patterns.
  • They're isolating and losing connection with supportive people.
  • They're struggling to maintain employment or daily responsibilities.
  • You've noticed mood changes, secrecy, or old behaviors returning.
  • They've expressed a desire to change but don't know where to start.
  • You feel like you're running out of options.

If any of these resonate, a conversation with us might help. Call (916) 406-4733.

Guidance for Families

How to Have the Conversation

Do:

  • Choose a calm, private moment — not during a crisis or argument.
  • Use 'I' statements: 'I'm worried about you' instead of 'You need to...'
  • Express love first. Make it clear this comes from care, not control.
  • Be specific about what you've observed — behaviors, not character.
  • Offer a concrete next step: 'I found a place called Taproot. Can we call together?'
  • Be prepared for resistance — and don't take it personally.

Don't:

  • Don't ambush them or have the conversation when emotions are high.
  • Don't use shame, guilt, or ultimatums as your opening move.
  • Don't compare them to others or minimize their experience.
  • Don't expect them to agree immediately — planting a seed is enough.
  • Don't give up after one conversation. Recovery is rarely linear.
A reminder for you

You Matter Too

Caring for someone in addiction takes a toll on your own health, relationships, and peace of mind. You deserve support too.

We encourage every family member to explore Al-Anon, therapy, or a support group. Healing is for everyone — not just the person in recovery.

Common Questions

Family FAQ

Absolutely. Many of our calls come from family members. We'll answer your questions, explain how sober living works, and help you think through the best approach to bring it up with your loved one. Call (916) 406-4733 any time.

That's a common and painful place to be. We can talk through what intervention options look like, how to set healthy boundaries, and what steps you can take in the meantime to protect your own wellbeing while staying ready to help when they are.

Yes. We encourage family involvement in recovery. Visitation guidelines are set to support a stable, structured environment, and our team can walk you through scheduling a visit.

With your loved one's consent, we can share updates on their progress. Respecting their privacy and autonomy is part of the recovery process, but we'll work with both of you to find a communication rhythm that feels right.

No. Sober living is a supportive, structured home environment for people in recovery — not a clinical treatment program. Many residents come to us after completing rehab, using sober living as the next step toward independent, sustainable recovery.

Sober living is a self-pay monthly arrangement. Your rate includes housing, utilities, house meetings, drug and alcohol testing, and 24/7 on-call support. Call us at (916) 406-4733 to learn more about current rates and availability.
